Well water odor guide

Why does my well water smell like sulfur?

A rotten egg smell usually points to hydrogen sulfide gas, sulfur bacteria, iron bacteria, a water heater reaction, or old plumbing. West Winds can test the system, sanitize when needed, and help choose treatment that prevents the odor from coming back.

Quick answer

If the smell is only in hot water, check the water heater first.

If cold water also smells like rotten eggs, the odor is more likely tied to the well, water chemistry, bacteria, plumbing, or treatment system. That is when professional water testing and well diagnostics matter.

Start with the hot-and-cold test.

  • Run cold water from a tap and check whether the odor is present.
  • Run hot water from the same tap and compare the smell.
  • If only hot water smells, the water heater anode rod or tank conditions may be involved.
  • If hot and cold both smell, schedule well diagnostics and water testing.

Possible causes

Sulfur odor can come from more than one place.

Hydrogen sulfide

Hydrogen sulfide can create a rotten-egg smell and may affect taste, staining, and metal fixtures.

Bacteria or minerals

Iron bacteria, sulfur bacteria, magnesium, calcium, sulfur, and iron can all change odor, taste, appearance, or staining.

Heater or house plumbing

If the well tests clean, the source may be a water heater reaction, older pipes, or a treatment component inside the home.

Treatment path

Fixing odor starts with knowing the source.

Sanitizing the well, chlorine or hydrogen peroxide injection, filters, and aeration systems can all help in the right situation. The right choice depends on whether the odor is coming from the well, bacteria, minerals, plumbing, or the water heater.

  • Schedule diagnostics before buying treatment equipment.
  • Ask whether water testing, sanitation, or filtration is the next step.
  • Call immediately if odor appears with loss of pressure, sediment, discoloration, or no water.
